Carpets hold on to more than crumbs. Dust, pet smells and the dull film a vacuum leaves behind settle into the fibers, but a full-size carpet cleaner is a lot of machine to drag out for a quick refresh. The best small carpet steam cleaner turns plain water into real steam, slides over carpet on a glider frame, and is light enough to store in a closet and carry upstairs. Adjustable steam and a few handy tools matter too, so the same machine can freshen a rug, steam the sofa and still mop your hard floors.
We compared 5 compact steam cleaners with carpet gliders across different price ranges and cleaning needs to help you find the right one for your home.

The best small carpet steam cleaner for each need
- Best overall: BISSELL PowerFresh Pet 19404 A slim steam mop with a carpet glider, three steam levels and a 23-foot cord. Best if you have carpet and sealed hard floors.
- Best for rugs and upholstery: PurSteam 10-in-1 Glides over rugs, then turns into a handheld with a garment tool for sofas, chairs and curtains.
- Most versatile: H2O X5 Its high setting is meant for carpets and rugs, and the kit adds an extension hose, a jet nozzle and two brushes.
- Best budget: Kenmore SteamLite SM2050 The lowest-priced pick when we checked, with a carpet slider, a handheld mode and about 20 minutes of steam per tank.
- Simplest to use: PurSteam Multi-Surface A plain stick steam mop with a carpet glider, quick heat-up and nothing extra to set up or store.
Steam refreshes and sanitizes the top of the carpet. It doesn’t pull dirt out of the pad. For deep stains and pet accidents, use a carpet cleaner that sprays and sucks up water.
The 5 Best Small Carpet Steam Cleaners
BISSELL PowerFresh Pet 19404
- Carpet glider, soft pad and scrubby pad in the box
- Three steam levels, ready in about 30 seconds
- Long 23-foot cord
- Odor-eliminating scent discs for pet homes
- 2-year limited warranty
- No handheld mode for sofas or stairs
- About 6 pounds, a little heavy to carry up stairs
- Steam only freshens carpet; it won’t pull out deep dirt
BISSELL PowerFresh Pet 19404 review
The PowerFresh Pet is our top pick because it does the two jobs most small homes need: a quick steam refresh for carpet and rugs, and a real clean on sealed hard floors. The carpet glider clips under the mop head so it slides over the pile instead of dragging, and the three steam levels let you go easy on the carpet and turn it up for sticky kitchen tile.
It's the pet edition of BISSELL's PowerFresh 1940, which earned a 9 out of 10 in a hands-on test. Testers found it easy to push, quick to heat up, and good at breaking down dried sauce and juice on the high setting without leaving streaks. That model weighed about 6.2 pounds and held 16 ounces of water. The Pet version adds scent discs that help with pet odors.
It has limits. There's no handheld mode, so it can't steam a couch or car seats, and it's a bit heavy to carry between floors. If fabric matters as much as floors, choose the PurSteam 10-in-1. If you want the most tools, look at the H2O X5.
PurSteam 10-in-1
- Carpet glider plus a detachable handheld steamer
- Garment tool lifted a lot of dirt from a sofa in hands-on testing
- Heats up in about 30 seconds
- Folding handle and stands on its own for storage
- Carpet glider takes some force to attach
- Small tank of about 12 ounces
- Short cord of about 16 feet
- Can leave streaks on hard floors on high
PurSteam 10-in-1 review
The PurSteam 10-in-1 is the pick for people whose carpet problem is really a living room problem. You glide over the rug, then pull the steamer off the pole and use the garment tool on the couch, chair cushions or curtains. For a small apartment where the rug and the sofa are the dirtiest things in the room, that's more useful than a bigger floor head.
In hands-on testing, it heated up in 25 to 30 seconds and covered about 250 square feet in two tanks. Testers said the carpet glider took some force to clip on and its results weren't remarkable, but it was useful for a refresh. The garment tool impressed them more, lifting a lot of dirt from a sofa on the low and middle settings without soaking the cushions. Other testers named it a strong value and found it powerful on stuck-on floor messes.
The downsides are the small tank, the short cord and a plastic build. For deep stains on fabric, a spray-and-suction machine like the ones in our carpet and upholstery cleaner guide does more. If you mostly steam floors, the BISSELL PowerFresh Pet is easier to live with.
H2O X5
- Carpet glider and a high steam setting for carpets and rugs
- Extension hose, jet nozzle, brass and nylon brushes
- Window and garment tools included
- Heats up in about 21 seconds per Consumer Reports’ specs
- Consumer Reports lists only about 9 minutes of run time per tank
- 1-year warranty
- Sold by the maker, not by Amazon
- No published carpet test we could find
H2O X5 review
The H2O X5 is for people who want one small steamer to cover as many jobs as possible. Its steam regulator has three levels, and the maker's own guide says to use the highest one for carpets and rugs, with the glider attached. Low and medium are for sealed hard floors, and a hot spray mode handles bathrooms, kitchens and car wheels.
The kit is the main reason to buy it. Besides the carpet glider and mop cloth, you get a bendable extension hose, a jet nozzle, metal and nylon round brushes, a window tool with a squeegee, a garment-steamer cloth and a dusting wand. That's enough to steam a rug, scrub grout and freshen curtains in one afternoon. Consumer Reports' spec sheet lists it at about 6 pounds, with a 13.3-ounce tank, a 21-second heat-up and a 20-foot cord.
The catch is run time. That same spec sheet lists about 9 minutes of steam per tank, so plan on refills for anything larger than a rug. The warranty is 1 year, and we found no published carpet test. If you mostly steam floors, the BISSELL is the better buy.
Kenmore SteamLite SM2050
- Lowest-priced pick when we checked
- Carpet slider and a handheld mode
- About 20 minutes of steam per tank
- Fast heat-up of about 21 seconds per Consumer Reports’ specs
- Only two steam levels on the Amazon listing
- Short 16-foot cord
- 1-year warranty
- Only three small accessory tools
Kenmore SteamLite SM2050 review
The Kenmore SteamLite is the budget pick because it keeps the features that matter for carpet and drops the extras. A carpet slider fits under the mop head for rugs and carpet, and the steamer comes off the pole for handheld jobs like appliance fronts, window sills and kids' toys. It uses cold water only, and Kenmore recommends distilled water.
Consumer Reports' spec sheet lists it at about 6 pounds, with a 12.9-ounce tank, a 21-second heat-up and about 20 minutes of run time. That's more than twice the run time listed for the H2O X5, so you can do a bedroom carpet and a hallway before refilling. The swivel head steers around chair legs and bed frames.
You give up some flexibility. The Amazon listing shows two steam levels, the 16-foot cord means more outlet changes, and the tool kit is small: a bristle tool, an angle tool and a scraper. The warranty is 1 year. If you want a garment tool for the sofa, step up to the PurSteam 10-in-1.
PurSteam Multi-Surface Steam Mop
- Carpet glider included
- Steam in about 30 seconds
- Simple stick design with built-in cable hooks
- Swivel head for getting around furniture
- No handheld mode or detail tools
- Small 11.8-ounce tank
- Weight and cord length aren’t published
- No published hands-on test we could find
PurSteam Multi-Surface Steam Mop review
This PurSteam is the simplest machine in our list. It's a stick steam mop with a swivel head and a carpet glider, and that's it. Fill the 11.8-ounce tank, wait about 30 seconds, and push it over the rug or the kitchen floor. Built-in cable hooks keep the cord tidy, and with no handheld or tool kit there's nothing to attach, detach or lose.
That makes it a good fit for people who want a quick refresh on area rugs and hall carpet between deep cleans, and for anyone who finds convertible steamers fiddly. The washable microfiber pads go in the laundry when you're done.
It ranks last for honest reasons. We couldn't find a published hands-on test, and the listing doesn't give a weight or cord length, so its place here rests on its features and the maker's listing. The tank is the smallest in the group, and it can't steam fabric. If you want proven results, choose the BISSELL PowerFresh Pet. If you want a handheld for less, the Kenmore is the better value.

Small carpet steam cleaners compared

Prices and availability change often. Tank, heat-up, cord and run-time figures come from maker listings and Consumer Reports' published spec sheets; test results come from the sources named in How We Picked and Tested. Star ratings are our editorial judgment, not our own lab tests.
Steam cleaner or carpet cleaner: which do you need?
Many people say "carpet steam cleaner" when they mean a carpet cleaner, also called an extractor. They are different machines, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake.
A steam cleaner boils plain water and pushes out hot vapor. On carpet, the glider lets the steam pad slide over the pile. The heat and moisture lift light surface dirt into the pad, loosen matted fibers, freshen musty rugs and kill many germs and dust mites it reaches. Very little water goes into the carpet, so it dries fast. What it can't do is pull dirt out from deep in the pile, because it has no suction.
A carpet cleaner sprays water and cleaning formula into the carpet, scrubs it, then sucks the dirty water back out. Some models, like BISSELL's HydroSteam line, use heated water but don't make real steam. That's the right tool for deep grime, set-in stains and pet accidents. Most carpet makers and the Carpet and Rug Institute recommend this kind of hot water extraction for deep cleaning.
So use a small steam cleaner for quick, chemical-free refreshes between deep cleans, and for hard floors and fabric. If you need to remove stains, our guide to the best small carpet cleaners covers compact extractors, and our handheld carpet cleaner picks cover spot cleaners for stairs and cars.
How to choose a small carpet steam cleaner
A steam mop without a glider drags on carpet and can leave wet patches. The glider lets the pad float over the pile.
Steam cleaners use only water. Heated-water carpet cleaners are a different tool with suction and formula.
Carpet needs steady steam, sealed wood needs a light touch and kitchen tile needs more.
A handheld lets you steam sofas, chairs, curtains and car seats, not just the floor.
Small steamers have small tanks, so run time and cord reach decide how much you can do in one go.
The point of a small steamer is that it lives in a closet and comes out fast.
What can a small steam cleaner do on carpet?
Freshen rugs and carpet. A few slow passes with the glider lift light dust and hair into the pad, fluff up flattened pile and leave a rug smelling cleaner, with no soap residue left behind.
Help with dust mites and fleas. Steam heat can kill dust mites and fleas it reaches directly, which is why many allergy sufferers steam rugs, mattresses and pet beds. Read our guide on whether steam kills fleas for how to do it properly. Steam doesn't remove the allergens mites leave behind, so pair it with a sealed vacuum like the ones in our vacuums for dust mite allergies guide.
Clean the rest of the house. Every pick here also steams sealed hard floors, and the handheld models do sofas, curtains, grout and appliances.
What it can't do. Steam won't lift set-in stains, mud ground into the pad or old pet accidents. It can also damage wool and some natural fibers, and it can set protein stains like urine and blood. Always check your carpet's care label first.
How to steam a carpet with a steam mop
-
Check the carpet first
Read the care label. Skip steam on wool, silk, jute and other natural fibers unless the maker says it’s safe, and test a hidden corner on any carpet.
-
Vacuum thoroughly
Steam works on the surface, so remove loose dirt, grit and hair first. Otherwise the pad just smears it around.
-
Use a clean pad and the glider
Put a fresh microfiber pad on the mop head, then clip on the carpet glider. Never steam carpet without it.
-
Keep it moving
Use low or medium steam, or the carpet setting if your model has one, and push in slow, overlapping passes. Don’t hold the mop in one spot.
-
Swap pads when they get dirty
A dirty pad stops picking up grime. Change it every room or two and wash used pads without fabric softener.
-
Let it dry and vacuum again
Open a window or run a fan. Once the carpet is dry, a quick vacuum lifts the pile back up.
A warning about pet urine
Don't steam fresh pee or old urine spots on carpet. Heat can bond the odor proteins to the fibers and make the smell harder to remove. Blot it up, treat it with an enzyme cleaner, then extract it. Our guide to the best carpet cleaner for cat urine covers machines and formulas that work.
Small carpet steam cleaner FAQs
What is the best small carpet steam cleaner?
The BISSELL PowerFresh Pet 19404. It comes with a carpet glider, has three steam levels and a 23-foot cord, and its sibling model scored well in hands-on testing. If you also want to steam a sofa or curtains, choose the PurSteam 10-in-1.
Can you use a steam mop on carpet?
Yes, if it comes with a carpet glider and your carpet is synthetic. Keep the mop moving on a low or medium setting. It refreshes the surface but won’t deep clean like a carpet cleaner with suction.
Does steam clean carpet better than shampoo?
Not for deep dirt. A carpet cleaner that sprays and extracts water removes more grime and stains. Steam is better for quick, chemical-free refreshes because it uses only water and dries faster.
Does steam cleaning sanitize carpet?
Hot steam can kill many germs and dust mites on the surface, but results depend on heat and contact time, and steam doesn’t reach deep into the pad. Our guide on whether steam cleaning disinfects explains the limits.
Can a steam mop damage carpet?
It can if you hold it in one place, use it without the glider or use it on wool and other natural fibers. Test a hidden spot first and check your carpet’s care label and warranty.
Can I steam a mattress with the same machine?
The handheld models can steam a mattress surface lightly. For a machine built for both jobs, see our picks for the best steam cleaner for mattress and carpet.
Should I use distilled water?
Many makers recommend distilled water, especially in hard-water areas, because minerals can build up inside the heater over time. Kenmore asks for cold distilled water in the SteamLite. Follow the manual for your model.
Which small carpet steam cleaner should you buy?
- Best overall: BISSELL PowerFresh Pet 19404
- Best for rugs and upholstery: PurSteam 10-in-1
- Most versatile: H2O X5
- Best budget: Kenmore SteamLite SM2050
- Simplest to use: PurSteam Multi-Surface Steam Mop
For most homes with carpet and hard floors, the BISSELL PowerFresh Pet is the easiest small steamer to own. Pick the PurSteam 10-in-1 if your sofa and curtains need steam too, the H2O X5 if you want the biggest tool kit, and the Kenmore SteamLite if price matters most. Remember that steam refreshes carpet; for deep stains, use a carpet cleaner with suction.
How We Picked and Tested
We started by defining what someone searching for a small carpet steam cleaner actually wants: a compact machine that uses real steam to freshen carpet and rugs, not a full-size carpet cleaner that sprays formula and sucks it back up. That ruled out extractors and heated-water machines, including BISSELL’s HydroSteam models, which our separate small carpet cleaner guide covers. Before choosing any model, we set three must-haves, and all five picks meet all three. First, real steam made from plain water, with no cleaning formula needed. Second, a carpet glider (Kenmore calls it a carpet slider) in the box, confirmed on each product’s Amazon listing or the maker’s page. Third, a small design: a slim stick steam mop or a stick that converts to a handheld, which stands or hangs upright for storage, with no canister, wheels or hose cart.
Those rules ruled out some well-known steamers. The Kärcher SC 3 EasyFix ships in the US without a carpet glider (it’s sold separately), the BISSELL PowerFresh Slim and PowerSteamer Heavy Duty don’t list one in the box, and canister steamers like the McCulloch models are too big for this list. We also left out the Dupray Neat and BISSELL Steam Shot models because of product recalls. Features we treat as optional, such as a handheld mode, the number of steam levels and the cord length, appear per pick in the comparison table instead of being used as rules.
To judge real performance, we relied on published testing and data rather than marketing claims. Bob Vila tested the BISSELL PowerFresh 1940, the sibling of our top pick, and rated it 9 out of 10; its steam mop roundup also tested the PurSteam 10-in-1. BestReviews tested the PurSteam 10-in-1 hands-on, including its carpet glider and garment tool. We used Consumer Reports‘ published spec sheets for the H2O X5 and the Kenmore SteamLite for weight, tank size, heat-up time, run time and cord length. HGTV and Reviewed also named the PurSteam 10-in-1 among their top steam mops. For carpet care advice, we followed the Carpet and Rug Institute’s guidance on hot water extraction and the Humane Society’s warning that heat can set urine odor.
Each award reflects where that model is strongest. The BISSELL PowerFresh Pet is best overall for its tested design, three steam levels, long cord and 2-year warranty; the PurSteam 10-in-1 earns rugs and upholstery for its handheld and garment tool; the H2O X5 earns most versatile for its carpet setting, hose and brushes; the Kenmore SteamLite earns best budget as the lowest-priced pick when we checked; and the PurSteam Multi-Surface earns simplest to use as the only stick-only design with nothing to attach. We found no published hands-on test of the PurSteam Multi-Surface or a carpet test of the H2O X5, and we say so in their reviews. We checked every spec against the makers’ listings and Amazon in October 2026. Steam, tank and run-time figures are maker or Consumer Reports spec data; test results come from the outside reviewers named above. We did not test these steam cleaners ourselves.
