Pet hair is hard on robot vacuums. It wraps around brush rolls, fills small bins halfway through a run and hides deep in carpet. Every Shark in this guide fights back with a self-cleaning brush roll and a base that empties the robot for you, but they don't clean equally. The best Shark robot vacuum for pet hair is the PowerDetect UV Reveal. It earned a perfect carpet pet hair score in one lab test and avoided more clutter than any other Shark tested. If you want strong hair pickup plus a mop for paw prints at a lower cost, the PowerDetect NeverTouch is the better buy.

The 5 Best Shark Robot Vacuums for Pet Hair
Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal
- 100% carpet pet hair pickup in Tom’s Guide’s lab test
- Best obstacle avoidance of the Sharks Vacuum Wars tested
- Long runtime that covered about 2,000 sq ft per charge in testing
- Base empties the bin and washes the mop in hot water
- Shark’s most expensive robot
- Mops very wet, so floors can stay damp for a while
- Only average on long, 7-inch hair
- Tall body may not fit under low sofas
Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal review
The UV Reveal earns Best Overall because it combines top-tier hair pickup with the best clutter handling in Shark's lineup. In Vacuum Wars' lab, it picked up 91.5% of flattened pet hair, well above the robot average. Tom's Guide recorded 100% pickup in its carpet pet hair test.
Pet homes also have more on the floor, like toys, bowls and leashes. This robot avoided 20 of 24 objects in Vacuum Wars' obstacle course, the best of any Shark they've tested. It uses lasers plus a camera to map and steer, and Shark's UV light helps it find dried pet stains for the mop.
It isn't perfect. Hair wrap with 7-inch strands was only average, so owners of long-haired breeds should still check the brush roll. The mop puts down a lot of water, and floors stayed damp for over 30 minutes in testing. Tom's Guide also found it weak with kitty litter on carpet, and at about 4.1 inches tall it may not fit under low furniture.
Buy it for mixed floors, heavy shedding and a cluttered home. If you want most of its hair pickup at a lower cost, choose the NeverTouch.
Shark PowerDetect NeverTouch 2-in-1
- About 95% pet hair pickup on hardwood in published tests
- Carpet deep cleaning well above average in lab tests
- Mop lifts over carpet and rugs
- Base empties, refills water and dries the mop pad
- Some hair stayed caught in longer carpet
- Below-average obstacle avoidance
- No water-level control for mopping
- Struggled with a 25 mm threshold in testing
Shark PowerDetect NeverTouch 2-in-1 review
This is the Shark to get if you have hard floors, a few rugs and a pet. Tom's Guide tested the PowerDetect 2-in-1 robot and measured about 95% pet hair pickup on hardwood and about 90% on carpet, for a combined pet hair score of 92.5. Vacuum Wars tested the same robot with Shark's NeverTouch Pro base and scored it 90% on carpet deep cleaning, well above average.
It handles paw prints and spills too. The mop lifts when the robot reaches carpet, and Tom's Guide found it removed dried stains without streaking. This version's base empties the bin for up to 60 days, refills the water tank for up to 30 days and dries the mop pad.
The weak spots are real. Vacuum Wars measured 83% on flattened pet hair, and Tom's Guide saw hair and loose debris stay caught in longer carpet. Obstacle avoidance was below average, and there's no way to set how much water it uses.
Choose it for hard floors with rugs. If carpet covers most of your home and you don't want mop upkeep, the vacuum-only PowerDetect is simpler.
Shark PowerDetect Self-Empty
- Carpet deep cleaning well above average in lab tests
- Crevice pickup in Vacuum Wars’ top 10 of 100+ robots
- HEPA self-empty base, per Shark
- Lifts itself over thresholds and rug edges
- No mop for paw prints on hard floors
- This version’s base holds 30 days, not 60
- Obstacle avoidance worked about half the time in one test
- Hair longer than about 7 inches can still wrap
Shark PowerDetect Self-Empty review
Pick this one if your home is mostly carpet and you don't want to deal with water tanks and mop pads. It uses the same PowerDetect vacuum technology as the NeverTouch: DirtDetect boosts suction in dirty spots, EdgeDetect blasts air to push hair out of corners and FloorDetect adjusts the brush roll for carpet or hard floors.
Vacuum Wars tested this robot with its 60-day base and found carpet deep cleaning significantly above average, with crevice pickup in its top 10 of more than 100 robots. The reviewers said the brush roll handles short hair, like most cat and dog fur, well.
Know the limits before you buy. This version's HEPA base holds about 30 days of debris, so heavy shedders will fill it sooner. The battery is about half the size of many rivals, the app is basic and obstacle avoidance worked only about half the time in testing, so pick up cords and socks first. Hair longer than about 7 inches can still wrap.
Choose it for carpeted homes. If you also have hard floors with paw prints, the NeverTouch adds a mop that lifts over rugs.
Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged
- 95% flattened pet hair pickup, best of the Sharks Vacuum Wars tested
- Mop pad washed at 185°F and dried at 175°F
- Carpet deep cleaning well above average
- Base empties for up to 60 days and refills water for 30
- Puts down a lot of water, which can leave streaks
- Below-average navigation and obstacle avoidance
- App has no water or suction controls
- Reviewers judged the cheaper NeverTouch Pro the better value
Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged review
The ThermaCharged is for homes with heavy shedders. Vacuum Wars measured 95% flattened pet hair pickup, the highest of the Sharks they've tested, plus 89% on carpet deep cleaning. Tom's Guide said it handled pet hair and daily grit on hard floors without trouble.
Its base helps with pet messes too. Shark says it washes the mop pad with 185°F water and dries it with 175°F air, so a pad that wiped up paw prints is less likely to smell. It empties the bin for up to 60 days.
Testing also found clear downsides. It puts down too much water, which raises the risk of streaks, and the app won't let you turn it down. Navigation and obstacle avoidance were below average, and Tom's Guide noticed missed spots. Vacuum Wars judged the regular NeverTouch Pro the better buy overall, since it cleaned about as well for less money.
Buy it if hair pickup is your top priority and you can tidy the floor before each run. For better navigation, choose the UV Reveal.
Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty
- Lowest-cost pick in this guide
- Self-cleaning brush roll and 360° LiDAR mapping
- HEPA self-empty base holds up to 60 days
- Matrix Clean makes crosswise passes over rugs
- Loud in one published test
- Older design without PowerDetect sensors
- Shorter rated runtime than the PowerDetect models
- No mop
Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty review
The AI Ultra is our budget pick because it has the three features that matter most for pet hair at the lowest cost in this guide: a self-cleaning brush roll, LiDAR mapping and a self-emptying base. This AV2511AE version's HEPA base holds up to 60 days of debris.
Its Matrix Clean mode drives over each area in a grid, first one way and then crosswise. That second pass helps pull fur out of rugs. In RTINGS' comparison with Shark's Matrix robot, the AI Ultra handled hair better and kept fine particles sealed in more effectively. GadgetReview measured about 96% debris pickup on carpet.
It's an older design, though. GadgetReview measured it at about 80 decibels, among the loudest in its group, and found the base sometimes didn't empty the bin completely. It lacks the PowerDetect models' dirt sensing and threshold lifting, and Shark rates it for up to 90 minutes per charge, though it recharges and resumes.
Choose it if you want reliable daily hair pickup without paying for the newest sensors. If your carpet needs deeper cleaning, the PowerDetect Self-Empty is the stronger vacuum.

Shark robot vacuums for pet hair compared

Prices and availability change often. Features come from Shark's listings, and test results come from the published sources named in How We Picked and Tested. Star ratings are our editorial judgment, not our own lab tests.
Which Shark robot vacuum is best for your pets?
Start with your floors, then think about your pets.
- Mostly carpet: the vacuum-only PowerDetect Self-Empty cleans carpet well and has no mop to maintain.
- Hard floors with rugs: the NeverTouch picks up hair, mops paw prints and lifts its mop over rugs.
- A cluttered floor with toys and bowls: the UV Reveal's obstacle avoidance was the best of Shark's lineup in testing.
- A heavy shedder: the ThermaCharged had the highest flattened pet hair score of any Shark in Vacuum Wars' tests.
- A tight budget: the AI Ultra still gives you a self-cleaning brush roll, LiDAR mapping and a 60-day base.
- Long-haired breeds: none of these robots fully stop hair over about 7 inches from wrapping, so check the brush roll every week or two.
If you're open to other brands, our guide to the best affordable robot vacuums for pet hair compares cheaper rivals that also resist tangles.
Which Shark robots should pet owners skip?
Skip the Shark ION robots if you have pets. They don't have a self-cleaning brush roll, so hair wraps around the brushes, and they don't have a self-emptying base. Their small bin fills quickly with fur, and they bump around at random instead of mapping your rooms.
We also left out the Matrix Plus 2-in-1. It has a self-cleaning brush roll, but its mop doesn't lift over rugs, which is a problem in homes with pet beds and area rugs. And check model numbers when buying renewed: Shark renames robots often, and older numbers usually lack self-cleaning brush rolls and app features.
How to choose a Shark robot vacuum for pet hair
Pet hair wraps around ordinary brush rolls and slowly cuts suction. Shark’s self-cleaning brush roll uses a built-in comb to pull hair off as it spins.
A robot’s own bin is small, and fur fills it fast. A self-empty base lets the robot finish a full run and keeps your hands out of the dust and dander.
Pet hair sinks into carpet pile, and marketing claims don’t tell you how much a robot leaves behind.
Pet toys, water bowls and accidents are a robot’s biggest hazards. Better avoidance means fewer stuck robots and smeared messes.
A mop helps with paw prints on hard floors, but it adds cost and upkeep.
Dander is a common allergy trigger, and emptying dumps it into the base.
Are Shark robot vacuums good for pet hair?
Yes, the newer ones are. Shark's self-cleaning brush roll is one of its biggest strengths, and every Shark in this guide has one. In Vacuum Wars' tests, the UV Reveal and ThermaCharged both picked up more than 90% of flattened pet hair, well above the average robot.
Their weak spots are long hair and the app. Hair wrap was only around average on 7-inch strands, and reviewers found the SharkClean app basic, without features like multi-floor maps or per-room water settings. If detailed app control matters most to you, our guide to the best budget robot vacuums with mapping covers brands with stronger apps.
Do you need the mop?
Only if you have hard floors that get dirty paw prints, food splashes or drool. For carpet, a mop adds little and costs more to maintain. The PowerDetect 2-in-1 models in this guide lift the mop when they reach carpet, so rugs and pet beds stay dry.
How to keep a Shark robot working well with pet hair
-
Run it daily during shedding season
Short daily runs catch hair before it gets ground into carpet. Schedule runs while your pet is outside or in another room.
-
Check the floor for pet messes first
No robot reliably avoids pet waste. Do a quick walk-through before a run, especially with puppies or older pets.
-
Clear hair from the brush roll every week or two
The self-cleaning brush roll handles short fur, but long hair can still wrap near the ends. Pull it off before it builds up.
-
Clean the filters
Tap out the robot’s filter and clean the base filters as Shark’s manual directs. A clogged filter cuts suction.
-
Empty the base before it's packed
With heavy shedders, the base fills faster than its rated days. Empty it outdoors or straight into a trash bag to keep dander down.
-
Vacuum stairs and sofas by hand
Robots can’t climb stairs or clean upholstery. Keep a stick or handheld vacuum for those spots.
Shark robot vacuum pet hair FAQs
What is the best Shark robot vacuum for pet hair?
The Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal. It scored 100% on carpet pet hair in Tom’s Guide’s lab and had the best obstacle avoidance of any Shark Vacuum Wars tested. For hard floors on a smaller budget, the PowerDetect NeverTouch is the better value.
Do Shark robot vacuums get tangled with pet hair?
Models with a self-cleaning brush roll resist tangles well with short and medium fur. Hair longer than about 7 inches can still wrap, so check the brush roll now and then. Shark’s ION robots don’t have this brush roll.
Which is better for pet hair, Shark AI Ultra or PowerDetect?
PowerDetect. It adds dirt sensing, edge cleaning and threshold lifting, and it scored well above average on carpet in lab tests. The AI Ultra still has a self-cleaning brush roll, LiDAR mapping and a 60-day base, so it’s a good lower-cost option.
Is a Shark robot vacuum good for long-haired dogs?
It’s good for daily upkeep, but no Shark fully stops long hair from wrapping. Plan to clear the brush roll every week or two, and keep a full-size vacuum for deep cleaning. Our guide to the best vacuums for heavy-shedding dogs covers stronger options.
Will a Shark robot vacuum avoid pet poop?
Don’t count on it. The UV Reveal avoided the most objects in testing, but Shark doesn’t promise to avoid pet waste. Check the floor before each run.
How long does a Shark self-empty base last with pets?
Shark rates its bases for 30 or 60 days of debris, but those numbers assume an average home. With a heavy shedder, expect to empty it more often.
Can I set no-go zones around pet bowls?
Yes. Every pick here maps your home with lasers, and the SharkClean app lets you draw no-go zones around bowls, litter boxes and pet beds.
Which Shark robot vacuum should you buy for pet hair?
- Best overall: Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal
- Best 2-in-1 value: Shark PowerDetect NeverTouch
- Best vacuum-only: Shark PowerDetect Self-Empty
- Best for heavy shedders: Shark PowerDetect ThermaCharged
- Best budget: Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty
Pick by floor type. The UV Reveal is the strongest all-rounder for mixed floors and cluttered homes. Hard floors with rugs suit the NeverTouch, while carpet-heavy homes can skip the mop with the vacuum-only PowerDetect. On a tighter budget, the AI Ultra still gives you a self-cleaning brush roll and a base that empties itself.
How We Picked and Tested
Our recommendations are based on independent lab results, SharkNinja’s published specifications and current Amazon listings. We relied most on Vacuum Wars, which has lab-tested more than 100 robot vacuums with repeatable pet hair, hair-wrap, carpet deep-clean and obstacle-avoidance tests; Tom’s Guide, whose testing measures how much pet hair, kitty litter and cereal a robot picks up from carpet and hardwood; and RTINGS‘ side-by-side robot comparisons. We also used GadgetReview’s noise and pickup measurements, SharkNinja’s product and replacement-part pages, and each model’s Amazon listing.
We started with what this search means. People looking for a Shark robot for pet hair want one that keeps fur off the floor day after day without tangling, clogging or needing to be emptied after every run. So every pick had to meet three requirements: a self-cleaning brush roll that combs hair off as it spins, a bagless base that empties the robot’s bin automatically, and laser-based mapping (360° LiDAR, or lasers plus a camera on the UV Reveal) so it covers whole rooms instead of bumping around at random. That ruled out Shark’s ION robots, which have neither the brush roll nor the base, and the Matrix Plus 2-in-1, whose mop doesn’t lift over rugs.
We then ranked the models on independent pet hair and carpet deep-clean scores first, followed by hair-wrap results, obstacle avoidance, base capacity and mop design. Each award reflects a tested strength: the UV Reveal for the best mix of hair pickup and clutter handling, the NeverTouch for strong hardwood and carpet results with a mop that lifts over rugs, the vacuum-only PowerDetect for above-average carpet cleaning without mop upkeep, the ThermaCharged for the highest flattened pet hair score of any Shark Vacuum Wars tested, and the AI Ultra for having all three must-have features at the lowest price when we checked. Where a lab tested a sibling version of the same robot with a different base, such as the NeverTouch Pro or the 60-day vacuum-only model, we say so in that review.
Features such as base capacity, mop washing temperatures and HEPA filtration are SharkNinja’s claims. Test scores are credited to the lab that measured them, and star ratings and awards are our editorial judgment. We did not test these robots ourselves.
